I imagine the absent Euclid as a sort of Icarus here.
The ladder (often used to represent ascension to Heaven) goes up
to the space where three flat Euclidian planes converge in that
corner. Euclidian space is OK for this kind of description of nature,
if I recall, and according to Einstein's General Theory, is applicable
quite accurately where gravity is WEAK. In stronger gravitation
(and IN REALITY), Euclidian space is a convenient fiction sort of
like the Newtonian universe. Euclid has collapsed upon the realization
of the inadequacy of his geometry and axioms -- he has "ascended"
by collapsing into the unimaginably strong gravity of a black hole
of consciousness and he has left us a slightly distorted symbol
of the singularity at the top of the ladder. A vestigial image of an
egg followed by a 2-dimensional representation of the singularity
(the dot) with the universe it defines (the circle). This is really
about dimensions, then, and Euclid's last flight was both FLYING
and FLEEING.
(This piece actually feels like a photo of a postmodern sculpture.)
