:icongawrilaghul:: Welcome to my humble show, :icongrahamsym:!
Do you enjoy being here? :)
:icongrahamsym:: Thank you for the warm welcome.
I am not sure yet, ask me later after I have been here a while. Its very intriguing.

:icongawrilaghul:: Oh, I am sure you will like BEING GHOULED! :pat::zombie:
So, why not start this one by telling our noble audience a bit more about what you are and what you do? :)
:icongrahamsym:: Wow! I have never been ghouled before! Is it a painful process?
What I am, is not what I think I am. When I look in the mirror I see an old wrinkly man looking back at me, who has no resemblance to me (getting old) yet still feels the need to create music and art. I was born and raised in London and just love the culture of art, music, dance and theatre.
What I do, is everything my wife tells me to! Its easier than not doing it. (Lots of weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth) :D

:icongawrilaghul:: No, relax! Just like western democracy, being ghouled is just GOOD FUN! :stab:
So, you also happen to do a lot of FRACTALS…
What does your wife think about this, and well… What exactly ARE fractals? :)
:icongrahamsym:: Yes I am addicted to fractals...
My wife likes fractal art and encourages me. As long as I get my chores done first!
A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop. Driven by recursion, fractals are images of dynamic systems - the pictures of Chaos. Geometrically, they exist in between our familiar dimensions. Fractal patterns are extremely familiar, since nature is full of fractals. For instance: trees, rivers, coastlines, mountains, clouds, seashells, hurricanes, etc. Abstract fractals - such as the Mandelbrot Set - can be generated by a computer calculating a simple equation over and over.
Fractal art is a form of algorithmic art created by calculating fractal objects and representing the calculation results as still images, animations, and media.

:icongawrilaghul:: That sounds quite difficult. Is it difficult? :)
:icongrahamsym:: It can be sometimes, its not necessary to understand the mathematics behind it. In Mandelbulb 3D www.fractalforums.com/index.ph… you can use sliders to change the parameters. It helps to understand things like moving an object on the x,y or z axis, also increasing its size, making it deeper, wider or taller etc.
I don't know much about other fractal programs, although I have just started experimenting with JWildfire www.andreas-maschke.com/?page_… both of these programs are free.

:icongawrilaghul:: Our noble audience will be delighted to hear! But let's talk a bit more about YOU! Because in your case, I even LIKE fractals, which can only mean you have mastered this art really well…
Mandelbulb Invasion Force by GrahamSym   Weapons Upgrade by GrahamSym   Dawn Of A New Age by GrahamSym   Mount Rustmore by GrahamSym
Would you agree? And if so, how long did it take to do so? :)
:icongrahamsym:: Im glad you like my fractals :D
I would not say I have mastered it, there is still so much to learn. Jesse the creator is always adding new features, to an extensive program.
Its fun to experiment and find new scenes.
I have been using Mandelbulb 3D for nearly two years.

:icongawrilaghul:: What is the difference between a RAW FRACTAL and a FRACTAL MANIPULATION? :)
:icongrahamsym:: A raw fractal is just that, nothing added, where as a fractal manip can be made up of several fractals or an addition of non fractal elements or manipulated in photoshop etc.

:icongawrilaghul:: Well, why not have a specific example for that…
In the Deep by GrahamSym   From The Deep by GrahamSym
What are the main differences between these two, and how you created them? :)
:icongrahamsym:: The first one 'In the deep' is a single render no background.
The second one 'From the deep' has a fractal background which was rendered seperately. I then used that as a background when rendering the foreground fractals.

:icongawrilaghul:: Actually, fractals also are a great way to create some, well, surrealist style atmosphere… I think.
Road to Nowhere by GrahamSym   Paranoid? by GrahamSym   Brain Salad Surgery by GrahamSym
How much of this is, in your case, intentional, and how much is just the nature of fractals? :)
:icongrahamsym:: The first two were intentional and the last one just popped out by chance whilst exploring!

:icongawrilaghul:: Would you agree that EXPLORING, technology for example, can be an art form in itself, too? :)
:icongrahamsym:: I totally agree, I love technology! I cannot paint or draw so I use computer art to express myself :)

:icongawrilaghul:: Considering art(istic) development, especially here on dA, what are your thoughts about digital art, generally? :)
:icongrahamsym:: I think digital art is just another medium, it is all art. The possibilities with digital art are endless.

:icongawrilaghul:: If this is so, just why do you think dA keeps getting flooded with the same boring style of photomanipulations all the time? :shifty:
:icongrahamsym:: Maybe people find them easy and enjoyable to do or they are popular. I think there are some very good photo manips out there that are skillfully and artistically done.

:icongawrilaghul:: Would you describe yourself as an OPTIMIST? :)
:icongrahamsym:: It depends on what mood I am in :D

:icongawrilaghul:: I see...
So talking about moods, in which one have you been HERE Witches Brew by GrahamSym...? :)
:icongrahamsym:: Optimistically thinking up ghoulish deeds for halloween.

:icongawrilaghul:: What did you do that Halloween? :)
:icongrahamsym:: Got dressed up as a mad scientist, got sweets ready, waited for kids to knock on the door but no one turned up, so I ate the sweets.

:icongawrilaghul:: That sounds sensible! :nod:
Does it represent your PERCEPTION? Windows of Perception by GrahamSym :)
:icongrahamsym:: Maybe at that time it did, perception is subjective.

:icongawrilaghul:: Why not tell our noble audience something about your CURRENT way of perception, then!
:icongrahamsym:: Well my current perception is that the world is going stark raving mad!

:icongawrilaghul:: What exactly do you perceive, and how much, as a fractal artist, is your perception connected with TECHNOLOGY? Hear My Train A Comin' by GrahamSym :)
:icongrahamsym:: This picture reminded me of the times going to work, waiting for a train early in the morning (which were usually delayed, cancelled or packed full) The joys of the rat race!
Technology enables me to create fantastic worlds.
Technology is a tool, without it I would not be able to do fractal art. Nature is the real fractal artist!
When I create a fractal, it allows my imagination to create a world of fantasy. I think it helps to have a vivid imagination.

:icongawrilaghul:: What effect do you think technology has and still will have on the art world, generally? :)
:icongrahamsym:: Technology has helped to make certain art forms easier to accomplish. Before computer software like Photoshop etc, to make a composite image you would have to physically cut and paste images from photo's etc.
I also like to use 3D programs like Blender and Truespace.
Music technology is the same, people are now able to record their bands music on their computers, where as before you needed expensive studio recording equipment.
Technology has enhanced our lives in many ways.

:icongawrilaghul:: Well, so I guess there still lies plenty of greatness ahead of us! :hooray:
So, from that perspective… What would your last words for our humble audience be? :)
:icongrahamsym:: I certainly hope so! Although the human element with technology can destroy us, nuclear bombs etc, but thats another debate.
In my humble opinion I believe art is not elitist, its for everyone, even for a boring old hippy like me!  Theres no such thing as good or bad art.  The important thing is to keep creating and don't be afraid.
Thanks very much. its been interesting being ghouled :iconfear-plz:

:icongawrilaghul:: I'll ignore the evil i-word and just say, thanks for the interview!
Ladies and gentlemen, :clap::icongrahamsym:!

Great interview! And I agree, art IS for everyone
